Karachi: Pakistani security forces successfully stopped a coordinated militant attack on the Frontier Corps (FC) headquarters in Nokundi, Balochistan, late Sunday night, preventing what authorities described as an attempt to create further instability in the region. The incident unfolded near the Afghanistan-Iran border, an area that has seen recurring security challenges in recent years.
According to officials, the confrontation began when a suicide bomber detonated explosives at the compound’s main entrance in an effort to breach the installation and clear the way for additional attackers. Moments after the blast, three armed militants attempted to force their way inside the facility. The explosion sent shockwaves across the immediate surroundings but failed to disable the base’s security measures.
The Frontier Corps’ Quick Response Force immediately engaged the attackers, launching a counteroperation that lasted only a short period due to the fast intervention of personnel on duty. Security forces opened fire on the intruders as they advanced into the compound, and all three militants were killed before they could inflict further damage or casualties.
Authorities confirmed that the assailants were members of the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group that has carried out a number of attacks targeting security forces and state infrastructure in the province. Investigators are examining evidence recovered from the site, including weapons and potential communication devices, to identify how the operation was planned and whether additional accomplices may have been involved.
Officials said the attempted assault appeared intended to escalate unrest in the border region, which has been the focus of increased security deployments to counter extremist activity. They added that heightened vigilance and rapid tactical response played a key role in preventing more serious consequences.
The Nokundi headquarters is a strategically important location for the Frontier Corps, which is tasked with both border management and counter-militancy operations in Balochistan. Security has been a major priority in the province due to recurring militant activity and tensions linked to separatist groups.
Following the incident, the area was cordoned off and a comprehensive sweep of the premises was carried out to ensure that no further threats remained. Additional forces were deployed as a precaution, while intelligence agencies continued to investigate the origins and objectives of the strike.
The government has not reported any casualties among security personnel resulting from the incident, though the suicide blast at the gate caused damage to the entry point. Emergency response teams also arrived on site soon after the confrontation, confirming that operations at the headquarters remained secure.
Officials indicated that the timing of the attack suggests an ongoing effort by insurgent networks to intensify violence, possibly in response to recent counterterrorism measures taken by state authorities. They reiterated that Pakistan’s security forces remain committed to maintaining stability and safeguarding key installations across the province.
Local residents reported hearing the explosion late in the night, followed by bursts of gunfire as the operation unfolded. However, authorities reassured the public that the situation was swiftly brought under control.
The foiled attack has once again drawn attention to the persistent threat posed by separatist militants in Balochistan. Investigators are now focused on analyzing whether this strike was linked to a broader campaign targeting security forces, or if it was meant as a symbolic act to demonstrate the group’s continued presence in the region.
As security agencies continue to evaluate the incident, officials praised the Frontier Corps personnel for their swift and decisive action in neutralizing the attackers. Further updates are expected after the ongoing investigation provides a clearer picture of the planning behind the failed assault.
