New Delhi: Two Indian vessels transporting large quantities of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) safely navigated the strategic Strait of Hormuz early on Saturday under the protection of Indian Navy warships, officials confirmed. The naval escort was arranged as a precautionary measure amid escalating tensions in West Asia that have disrupted shipping routes in the region.

The vessels — Shivalik and Nanda Devi — are carrying a combined 92,700 tonnes of LPG imported from Gulf countries. According to shipping officials, the tankers successfully crossed the narrow but crucial maritime corridor and are now en route to ports in Gujarat.

The tanker Shivalik is expected to reach Mundra Port on March 16, while Nanda Devi is scheduled to arrive at Kandla Port the following day.

Security Measures Amid Regional Tensions

The naval escort was arranged after a surge in geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has led to instability across the West Asian region. The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil and gas transit routes, has remained particularly sensitive since early March due to attacks and retaliatory actions that have affected maritime security.

Officials indicated that the Indian Navy’s presence in the area was intended to ensure the safe movement of merchant vessels and prevent disruptions to critical energy shipments.

Indian Ships Affected by Crisis

Government sources said that 28 Indian‑flagged vessels had been stranded or delayed in the region when the security situation deteriorated earlier this month. Authorities have been closely monitoring the developments and coordinating with regional governments to secure safe navigation routes.

The Ministry of Shipping and other agencies are working alongside diplomatic channels to facilitate the movement of Indian vessels and protect the interests of shipping operators.

Importance for India’s Energy Supply

The safe transit of LPG shipments is crucial for India’s energy needs. Approximately 60 percent of India’s LPG imports originate from Gulf countries, making uninterrupted maritime transport through the Strait of Hormuz essential for maintaining supply stability.

Energy analysts note that any prolonged disruption in the region could have implications for domestic fuel availability and global energy markets. As a result, Indian authorities have been closely tracking the situation and implementing measures to safeguard supply chains.

Continued Monitoring

Officials stated that the government remains in constant communication with shipping companies and international partners to assess risks and provide assistance if required. The Indian Navy continues to maintain readiness in the region to support commercial vessels and ensure the safety of maritime trade routes.

With both tankers now safely beyond the most sensitive stretch of the strait, authorities expressed confidence that the cargo will reach Indian ports without further disruption.
