New Delhi: India has established a One Stop Centre for Women (OSCW) in Canada to provide focused assistance to Indian passport-holding women who are facing distressing situations. The centre has been set up by the Consulate General of India in Toronto and is aimed at offering structured support to women requiring help while living abroad.

According to officials, the One Stop Centre for Women has been created to address a wide range of challenges faced by Indian women in Canada. These include cases related to domestic violence, abuse, family disputes, abandonment, exploitation and various legal difficulties. The initiative is intended to serve as a single-point facility where affected women can seek guidance and support in times of need.

A key feature of the centre is a dedicated 24×7 helpline, which has been introduced to ensure that assistance is available at all hours. The helpline is meant to provide timely support in emergency situations and help women connect with the appropriate services without delay. Officials said the round-the-clock nature of the helpline is designed to respond effectively to urgent and sensitive cases.

The One Stop Centre is being run by a woman Centre Administrator. The administrator will oversee the functioning of the facility and ensure that women approaching the centre receive appropriate support. The centre is expected to operate as a coordinated support mechanism rather than a standalone service.

Services offered at the OSCW include counselling and psycho-social support for women experiencing emotional or psychological distress. The centre will also facilitate coordination for legal advice, helping beneficiaries understand their options and connect with relevant legal resources where required. In addition, the facility will assist women in linking with community and social service organisations operating in Canada.

Officials clarified that all assistance provided by the centre will strictly adhere to the legal framework of Canada. The centre will function in coordination with local systems and services, ensuring that support is extended in compliance with Canadian laws and regulations. The role of the OSCW is to guide, support and coordinate, rather than intervene outside established legal processes.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto has taken the lead in setting up the facility as part of India’s broader efforts to support its citizens overseas. The focus of the centre is specifically on Indian passport-holding women who may find themselves in vulnerable situations and require structured assistance while navigating personal or legal challenges.

The initiative reflects an emphasis on welfare-oriented services for the Indian diaspora, particularly women who may face difficulties in unfamiliar environments. By offering counselling, coordination and emergency assistance through a single platform, the centre seeks to reduce the barriers women may encounter when trying to access help.

Officials said the establishment of the OSCW in Canada highlights the importance placed on ensuring that Indian women abroad have access to reliable support systems. The centre is expected to act as a point of contact for women who may otherwise struggle to identify the appropriate channels for assistance.

While the centre will not replace local support mechanisms, it is intended to complement existing services by providing guidance, referrals and coordination. The involvement of a dedicated administrator and the availability of a 24×7 helpline are aimed at ensuring continuity and responsiveness.

The launch of the One Stop Centre for Women in Canada underscores India’s continued efforts to strengthen welfare support for its citizens living overseas. With a particular focus on women in distress, the initiative aims to provide reassurance and accessible assistance through an institutional framework managed by Indian diplomatic authorities.
