New Delhi: The Central government on Tuesday informed the Lok Sabha that the 2027 Census will adopt a fully digital format, marking a major shift in the way national population data is collected.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, replying to a question raised by SP MP Sanatan Pandey, said the upcoming Census will be conducted using digital tools, including specially designed mobile applications for field officers. For the first time, citizens will also have the option to submit their details independently through a dedicated web portal.
Rai explained that individuals will be counted at the place where they are physically located during the enumeration period, consistent with standard Census practices. He added that the digital process will record several additional data points, including migration status, place of birth, last usual residence, duration of stay, and the reason for migration.
These expanded categories aim to provide more detailed insights into mobility patterns and demographic changes across the country.
The Minister further stated that the detailed Census questionnaire will be notified ahead of the enumeration exercise, allowing citizens and officials to familiarize themselves with the updated format and requirements.
The move toward a digital Census is expected to streamline data collection, improve accuracy, and expedite processing, forming a key part of the government’s push for modernized governance systems.
