Kolkata: In a significant administrative move ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India has ordered the transfer of several senior bureaucratic and police officials in West Bengal.

Among those shifted are key positions including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), Kolkata Police Commissioner, and other senior officers. The officials have been directed not to take part in any election-related duties until the completion of the polling process.

The Commission has simultaneously ensured that replacements are appointed without delay. Newly designated officers have taken charge in accordance with strict timelines issued by the poll body. Authorities were instructed to implement the transfers immediately and submit confirmation of the new postings within a few hours.

Officials from the Election Commission described the decision as one of the largest administrative reshuffles carried out in the state in recent times. The move is intended to uphold neutrality in the electoral process and to ensure that all procedures are conducted in line with constitutional provisions.

The Commission stated that the action is aimed at maintaining law and order during the election period, preventing incidents of violence, and reinforcing public confidence in the electoral system.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had earlier stressed the importance of conducting elections in a peaceful and transparent manner. He also cautioned officials against any form of misconduct or bias, underlining the need for strict adherence to guidelines.

The transfer orders come as part of the Commission’s broader preparations for the West Bengal Assembly elections. The poll schedule has been announced, with voting set to take place in two phases.

The first phase of polling will be held on April 23, followed by the second phase on April 29. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.

The administrative changes are expected to play a key role in ensuring that the election process is conducted smoothly across the state. By replacing top officials and assigning new responsibilities, the Commission aims to create an environment conducive to free and fair voting.

Officials indicated that strict monitoring will continue throughout the election period. Measures have been put in place to ensure compliance with the Model Code of Conduct and to address any irregularities promptly.

The reshuffle reflects the Commission’s emphasis on impartial administration during elections, particularly in states where maintaining law and order is considered critical. The newly appointed officers are expected to oversee preparations and ensure that polling arrangements meet required standards.

Further updates are expected as election preparations progress and the state moves closer to the polling dates.
