Bhubaneswar: President Droupadi Murmu arrived in her hometown Rairangpur in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Friday for a two-day visit, ahead of a major state event that will also be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the President could not fly directly to Rairangpur and instead travelled by road from Kalaikunda Airstrip in West Bengal, reaching the town nearly two hours behind schedule.

President Murmu was accorded a warm welcome by Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, public representatives and senior government officials.

Chief Minister Majhi said the President’s visit to mark the completion of two years of the BJP-led Odisha government has added pride and prestige to the state. He described Murmu’s journey from a humble background to the country’s highest constitutional office as a source of inspiration for people across Odisha.

During her visit, President Murmu inaugurated a medical camp organized by AIIMS Bhubaneswar at the Sub-District Hospital in Rairangpur. She also launched a mega integrated rural piped water supply project for mining-affected villages under Kusumi Block, inaugurated Matrushakti Bhavan of the Brahma Kumaris, and dedicated the Special Circuit House and Rairangpur Police District facilities.

The President is scheduled to celebrate her birthday in Rairangpur on June 20, making the occasion especially significant for local residents.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join President Murmu on Saturday for a high-profile event marking the second anniversary of the Odisha government. The visit is expected to be a rare occasion where both the President and Prime Minister will share the stage in the state.

According to the official schedule, President Murmu and PM Modi will first visit Pahadpur village in Mayurbhanj district, where they will offer prayers at the sacred Santhali Jahera and Ho Jahera groves. The two leaders will also visit a skill development centre and Pahadpur School before attending the anniversary programme in Rairangpur.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to address a large public gathering during the event. Projects worth nearly Rs 47,000 crore are likely to be inaugurated or have their foundation stones laid, covering key sectors of development in Odisha.

Extensive security arrangements have been put in place by Odisha Police across Mayurbhanj district, particularly in and around Rairangpur, to ensure smooth conduct of the visits by the President and Prime Minister.
