Noida: An FIR has been registered against doctors of a private hospital in Greater Noida following allegations that a half-metre-long surgical cloth was left inside a woman’s abdomen during a delivery procedure performed in 2023. Senior officials of the health department have also been named in the case, police said.
According to the police, the complaint was lodged by Anshul Verma, who underwent a childbirth procedure at Bakson Hospital in Tughlakpur, Greater Noida, on November 14, 2023. She alleged that medical negligence during the delivery led to a surgical cloth being left inside her body, causing prolonged health complications.
Police officials stated that after the delivery, Verma began experiencing severe abdominal pain. Her condition reportedly persisted, prompting her to seek further medical attention. She was later admitted to Kailash Hospital for treatment, where doctors decided to conduct surgery to determine the cause of her ongoing health issues.
During the surgical procedure performed on April 22, 2025, doctors reportedly discovered a half-metre-long surgical cloth inside her abdomen. The cloth was subsequently removed during the operation. The finding, according to the complaint, confirmed her suspicion that a foreign object had been left behind during the earlier delivery procedure.
Following the discovery, Verma approached the police and filed a formal complaint detailing the sequence of events, including the delivery at the private hospital, her prolonged suffering, and the eventual recovery of the surgical cloth during surgery at a different medical facility.
Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered on December 24 against doctors Anjana Agarwal and Manish Goyal, who were associated with the delivery procedure at Bakson Hospital. Police officials said the case has been registered to investigate allegations of medical negligence and determine accountability.
Authorities stated that the investigation will examine medical records related to the delivery conducted in November 2023, as well as the subsequent treatment and surgery carried out in April 2025. Statements from the complainant, medical professionals involved, and hospital authorities are expected to be recorded as part of the probe.
Police said the role of senior health department officials named in the FIR will also be examined during the investigation. Officials clarified that the purpose of the probe is to establish whether standard medical protocols were followed during the delivery procedure and whether any lapses occurred.
The case has drawn attention due to the serious nature of the allegations and the length of time between the delivery and the discovery of the surgical cloth. Police said they are proceeding with caution and will rely on medical evidence and expert opinion to determine whether negligence can be established.
Investigators are also expected to review post-delivery treatment records and diagnostic reports to understand how the condition remained undetected for an extended period. The findings from the April 2025 surgery are likely to play a key role in the inquiry.
Police officials said further legal action will depend on the outcome of the investigation. They added that responsibility will be fixed based on evidence collected during the probe and in accordance with applicable legal provisions.
The FIR marks the formal beginning of legal proceedings in the matter, and authorities said updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
