Cranes remove burnt buses after a fog-triggered multi-vehicle collision on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura on Tuesday.

Mathura: At least 13 people lost their lives and 35 others were injured in a devastating multi-vehicle collision on the Yamuna Expressway early Tuesday morning after dense fog sharply reduced visibility, officials said. The accident occurred around 4:30 a.m. near Milestone 127 under the jurisdiction of the Baldev police station.

According to authorities, the pile-up involved a total of ten vehicles, including seven buses and three smaller vehicles. Poor visibility caused by thick fog is believed to have played a critical role in the chain collision, which unfolded within a short span of time on the high-speed corridor.

Police officials said that several buses rammed into each other after drivers failed to see stationary or slowing vehicles ahead. The impact of the collision was severe, leaving multiple vehicles heavily damaged. In the aftermath of the crash, some of the buses caught fire, further complicating rescue and relief efforts.

Emergency services were rushed to the scene immediately after the incident was reported. Firefighters, police personnel, and medical teams worked together to rescue passengers trapped inside the damaged and burning vehicles. Cranes were deployed to remove the wreckage and clear the charred remains of the buses from the expressway.

Officials said that all injured passengers were promptly shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Medical authorities later confirmed that the injured are out of danger and are receiving necessary care.

The accident led to temporary traffic disruption on the Yamuna Expressway as rescue operations and vehicle clearance continued for several hours. Authorities regulated traffic movement in the affected stretch to facilitate emergency response and prevent further incidents.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the tragic accident. In a statement, he conveyed his condolences to the families of those who died and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The Chief Minister announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for those injured. He also directed district and health officials to ensure that all injured passengers receive proper medical treatment and support.

Local administration officials said an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact sequence of events that led to the collision. While dense fog is being considered the primary cause, authorities are also examining other factors, including vehicle speed and adherence to safety norms.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of driving during severe fog conditions, especially on high-speed expressways during early morning hours. Officials urged motorists to exercise caution, reduce speed, and follow safety advisories during winter fog to avoid such accidents.
