Chennai: Preparations have been stepped up across Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Ditwah moves closer to the state’s coastline, triggering widespread rainfall and gusty winds in several southern and delta regions. The approaching system has already disrupted air travel, with operations at Chennai Airport temporarily reduced due to safety concerns.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the cyclone is currently travelling over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is likely to move toward north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by November 30. Weather officials stated that the next 24 hours remain crucial as the storm’s trajectory and landfall point continue to be monitored closely.
Heavy Rainfall in Coastal Districts
Significant rain has been recorded in Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam and other coastal belts, accompanied by strong winds sweeping across low lying areas. Local authorities have urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary and to remain alert to official advisories.
Chennai, too, has started witnessing intermittent showers as outer cloud bands of the cyclone expand toward the city.
Flights Cancelled as Precaution
Airport officials confirmed that 54 flights scheduled from Chennai were cancelled on Friday due to deteriorating weather conditions and anticipated turbulence. Passengers were advised to check revised schedules and await further updates as the situation evolves.
Relief & Safety Preparedness
The Tamil Nadu Government has activated comprehensive response efforts to minimize cyclone related risks.
Key measures issued include:
- Deployment of 28 disaster response teams, including SDRF and NDRF units
- Indian Air Force and Coast Guard placed on high alert
- Nearly 6,000 relief camps arranged for possible evacuations
- Continuous monitoring of vulnerable coastal settlements
Officials confirmed there have been no casualties so far, though damage assessments show 24 thatched houses affected and 16 livestock losses in early impacts from the cyclone’s outer bands.
Coastal Access Restrictions
Authorities have cordoned off Dhanushkodi — a popular tourist destination near Rameswaram — prohibiting public entry due to severe sea conditions. Fisherfolk along the eastern coastline have been instructed not to venture into the sea until further notice.
Government Closely Tracking Landfall Risk
With the system showing potential to shift slightly northwards, there remains the possibility of the cyclone making landfall closer to Chennai, officials indicated. Emergency teams and district administrations in Chennai, Cuddalore and Villupuram are therefore on heightened alert.
The state government also urged citizens to maintain caution over travel and avoid non essential movement, particularly in flood prone zones.
Continued Monitoring
Meteorologists note that additional strengthening of the cyclone cannot be ruled out as it continues over warm sea waters. IMD bulletins will be updated more frequently as the system nears the coastline.
Officials reiterated that protecting lives remains the top priority, and relief agencies are fully equipped to respond swiftly if evacuations become necessary.
Residents are urged to follow only verified alerts and keep emergency contacts accessible.
