New Delhi: The US Embassy in India has expressed appreciation for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the agency dismantled an illegal call centre network allegedly involved in defrauding American citizens and arrested a key member of the operation.
In a statement shared on X, the Embassy said both nations’ law enforcement authorities are working jointly to curb cross-border cybercrime. “India’s Central Bureau of Investigation has dismantled an illegal call centre targeting US nationals and arrested a key operative in the transnational cybercrime network,” it noted, adding that coordinated efforts aim to prevent future scams and enhance public safety.
Earlier this week, the CBI confirmed the arrest of Vikas Kumar Nimar, who was wanted for his alleged role in running multiple illegal call centres targeting foreign nationals, particularly US citizens. He was taken into custody from his residence in Lucknow on November 20, 2025, acting on a warrant issued by the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Pune.
The case was initially registered on September 24, 2024, prompting widespread searches across various states. In operations conducted that same month, the CBI uncovered and shut down four call centres operating from Pune, Hyderabad, and Visakhapatnam.
According to the agency, Nimar played a central role in establishing and managing call centres under the name VC Infrometrix Pvt. Ltd. He had been evading authorities since the investigation began.
Investigators said the dismantled facilities were part of an organised cybercrime network designed to deceive US nationals through fraudulent calls and online scams.
During the arrest, officials recovered ₹14 lakh in cash, several mobile phones, and documents believed to contain evidence of the alleged illicit activities. The CBI also located another active call centre in Lucknow, which was immediately shut down. From this site, officers seized 52 laptops containing suspected digital evidence linked to the scam.
The CBI stated that further investigation is ongoing.
