Mumbai: Entrepreneur Upasana Kamineni Konidela, wife of South Indian star Ram Charan, has reignited a discussion on women choosing to freeze their eggs to prioritise their careers. Her remarks, which drew criticism online, prompted her to once again outline her views on X (formerly Twitter).
In her latest posts, Upasana said she was “happy to have sparked a healthy debate” and thanked people for their respectful responses. She encouraged followers to review images she shared, noting they contained “important facts” to help them form informed opinions. She also urged employers to “work together to get more women into the workforce.”
Raising a series of questions, Upasana asked whether it was wrong for a woman to marry for love, wait for the right partner, choose when to have children, or prioritise her career over early marriage and motherhood.
She then shared details of her own life choices as part of a “fact check.” Upasana said she married for love and companionship at 27, and at 29 chose to freeze her eggs for personal and health reasons — a decision she has spoken about publicly to encourage other women. She clarified that the procedure was not done at Apollo.
Upasana welcomed her first child at 36 and is currently expecting twins at 39. Emphasising balance, she said she has always valued both her career and marriage, noting that a “happy, stable environment” is crucial when raising a family. “For me, marriage and career are not competing priorities — they are equally meaningful parts of a fulfilled life. But I decide the timeline! That’s not privilege; it’s my right,” she wrote.
The renewed conversation follows her recent appearance at an event in Hyderabad, where she spoke about the importance of egg freezing, describing it as the “biggest insurance for women” that allows them to decide when to marry and when to have children once they are financially independent.
Upasana and Ram Charan married in 2012. The couple welcomed their daughter in 2023, when Upasana was 34, and are now reportedly expecting twins. She announced her pregnancy during Diwali this year through a social media post.
