United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over reports of multiple attacks across Mali, condemning the violence and calling for urgent measures to protect civilians.
According to a statement issued by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief conveyed solidarity with the people of Mali and stressed the importance of safeguarding civilian lives and infrastructure.
The statement highlighted the need for coordinated international efforts to address the growing threat of violent extremism and terrorism in the Sahel region. It also underscored the urgency of meeting humanitarian needs arising from the attacks.
Guterres reiterated his call for enhanced regional cooperation and security coordination to effectively respond to the evolving situation. The UN emphasised that sustained collaboration among countries in the region is essential to counter such threats.
Meanwhile, Mali’s transitional government reported that armed groups carried out coordinated attacks in several cities earlier in the day. According to official information, at least 16 people were injured in the incidents.
Authorities said the attacks targeted multiple locations, including the garrison towns of Kati, Sevare, Gao and Kidal, as well as the capital, Bamako. Security forces responded to the situation and brought the attacks under control.
Officials stated that several attackers were killed during the operations and that their plans were foiled. The injured, including both civilians and military personnel, were taken to medical facilities for treatment.
The government also indicated that material damage from the attacks was limited. It urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant, advising them to report any suspicious activity and rely on official sources for information.
In response to the security situation, the Bamako District authorities imposed a curfew across the capital. The restrictions are in place for 72 hours, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. local time, and may be extended if necessary.
Earlier, the General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces announced that a large-scale security operation was underway in Bamako, Kati and other affected areas. The operation aims to stabilise the situation and prevent further incidents.
Officials added that several hundred militants had been killed during the ongoing operations, though details remain limited.
The developments have raised concerns about the security situation in Mali and the broader Sahel region, which has witnessed recurring incidents of violence in recent years.
The United Nations’ response highlights the need for continued international attention and cooperation to address both security and humanitarian challenges in the region.
