Mumbai: The Tamil psychological thriller Stephen weaves together murder, buried trauma and shifting motives, delivering a tense narrative driven by unexpected twists.

The film, which marks the directorial debut of Mithun Balaji, features Gomathi Shankar in the lead role alongside Michael Thangadurai and Smruthi Venkat. With its atmospheric score and emotional undercurrents, Stephen introduces a fresh creative voice to Netflix’s Tamil offerings.

Reflecting on his debut, Mithun said, “Stephen centres on a calm and calculated serial killer who carries deeply personal secrets. Gomathi Shankar brings a quiet intensity to the role, making the character feel both real and unsettling. As a first-time filmmaker, this project is extremely meaningful to me. We approached the subject with sincerity and care, and I’m thankful to Netflix for giving us the platform to tell a story within this unique genre.”

He added that presenting the film to viewers across more than 190 countries feels “unreal,” and expressed hope that audiences would appreciate the team’s effort.

Monika Shergill, Vice-President of Content at Netflix India, described the film as “a twisted psychological thriller” that follows a poised killer whose hidden truths unravel steadily, keeping viewers guessing until its final moments. She noted that the film highlights rising talent Gomathi Shankar and introduces an authentic new storytelling voice through Mithun Balaji’s debut.

Packed with suspense and grounded in emotion, Stephen invites viewers into a world where appearances deceive and no one is exactly who they seem.

The film premieres on Netflix on December 5.
