Jaisalmer: Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat visited the iconic Gadisar Lake in Jaisalmer on Friday and expressed admiration for its striking natural appeal and architectural heritage. The Minister inspected the surroundings of the historic water reservoir, which remains one of the city’s most notable attractions for domestic and international tourists.
After the visit, Shekhawat said the lake stands out as a testament to Rajasthan’s rich legacy, where culture and nature coexist seamlessly. He highlighted that the temples, ghats and yellow sandstone structures built around the lake serve as a reminder of the region’s traditional craftsmanship and architectural excellence.
Shekhawat noted that the lake provides a distinctive experience within the desert landscape, offering serene views that draw visitors throughout the year. The Minister said that the changing colours of the sun during dawn and dusk create unforgettable scenery at the lake’s edge, making sunrises and sunsets a major highlight for travellers and photography enthusiasts.
While interacting with officials and locals present at the site, Shekhawat emphasized the importance of preserving such heritage destinations as India continues to promote its diverse tourism offerings. He stated that maintaining the natural beauty of Gadisar Lake and enhancing visitor facilities will further boost Jaisalmer’s position on the global tourism map.
The Minister remarked that the peaceful environment around the lake brings a refreshing sense of calm to those who visit, adding that Gadisar Lake has the potential to attract even more tourists seeking an authentic cultural and nature‑based experience. He expressed that the site holds immense sentimental value for Rajasthan and its communities, as it reflects the region’s history of water conservation and devotion.
Shekhawat also highlighted the role of tourism in supporting local livelihoods, including guides, shop owners, boat operators and artisans who depend on visitor footfall. He reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable tourism initiatives that protect natural and cultural heritage while ensuring economic benefits reach local people.
Tourism officials accompanying the Minister said that development proposals are under consideration to further enhance the visitor experience without disturbing the lake’s ecological balance. These include improved amenities, heritage conservation measures and awareness initiatives encouraging responsible travel.
As tourism continues to recover and evolve, the Union Minister called for collaborative efforts between authorities, residents and stakeholders to safeguard the legacy of destinations like Gadisar Lake for future generations.
