New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended the outstanding passion, energy and skill shown by participants at the Kashi Sansad Khelkud Pratiyogita, describing the event as a significant effort in strengthening India’s presence in the global sporting arena.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister congratulated all winners and participants across the various sporting categories contested during the tournament.

“Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to all the winners and participants of the Kashi Sansad Sports Competition! The enthusiasm and energy shown by the young participants were truly remarkable. They exceptionally displayed their talent and skill. I am very happy that this event is playing an important role in giving a new identity to the country in the world of sports. This commendable initiative has provided a strong platform for the youth, where they are winning everyone’s hearts with their abilities,” PM Modi wrote.

Held by the Varanasi district administration, the tournament aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of strengthening sports at the grassroots level and offers a unified stage for both rural and urban athletes. Kashi’s longstanding sporting tradition — home to celebrated names such as the late Mohammed Shahid, Prashanti Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Vivek Singh, Sanjeev Singh, Swati Singh, and Vijay Yadav — continues through this initiative.

Under the Uttar Pradesh government’s framework, the programme encourages participation in designated sports through competitions at block and district levels, eventually advancing to divisional and state stages. Beyond identifying promising athletes, the event aims to nurture discipline, sportsmanship and confidence among young players.

The initiative also supports holistic youth development by promoting leadership, national pride, social awareness and community sensitivity. Additionally, rural cultural performers are given opportunities to showcase their talent at the State and National Youth Festivals, contributing to the cultural advancement of the region.
