Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced that talks between Israel and Lebanon are set to take place on Thursday, as part of efforts to reduce tensions between the two countries.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the initiative aims to create “a little breathing room” between the two sides. He noted that it has been decades since leaders from Israel and Lebanon last engaged directly, indicating the significance of the upcoming discussions.
The announcement follows a meeting held earlier this week in Washington, where representatives from Israel and Lebanon held discussions under US facilitation. During the meeting, Israel reiterated its demand for the disarmament of Hezbollah, while Lebanon called for a ceasefire and measures to address the humanitarian situation arising from the ongoing regional conflict.
According to a statement from the US State Department, all parties agreed to initiate direct negotiations at a mutually decided time and venue. The engagement marked one of the first major high-level interactions between the two countries in recent decades.
Officials described the meeting as an important step towards easing tensions and exploring possibilities for a broader understanding between the two sides. The discussions are part of a wider diplomatic effort by the United States to stabilise the region.
Earlier, US authorities clarified that a potential ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon is not directly linked to ongoing negotiations with Iran. A senior administration official said that while Washington has not formally sought a truce in Lebanon, it would welcome an end to hostilities as part of a larger peace arrangement.
The remarks highlight the US approach of separating different tracks of diplomacy while continuing to engage with regional stakeholders. Officials indicated that the immediate focus is on building confidence between Israel and Lebanon rather than securing an immediate ceasefire.
The talks were hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, marking a rare instance of direct engagement between the two countries. US officials described the discussions as a step towards reducing tensions and creating conditions for future negotiations.
Another senior official said the United States is aiming for a durable peace rather than a short-term arrangement. The emphasis, according to officials, is on establishing trust and fostering political momentum that could eventually lead to a lasting agreement.
The renewed diplomatic efforts come amid broader regional tensions, with multiple flashpoints contributing to instability. The situation in Lebanon is seen as a key factor that could influence the overall trajectory of peace efforts in West Asia.
US officials acknowledged that stabilising relations between Israel and Lebanon is essential to prevent further escalation. The talks are expected to focus on measures that can reduce tensions and create space for continued dialogue.
As the negotiations move forward, the international community is closely monitoring developments. The outcome of the talks could play a role in shaping future diplomatic initiatives in the region.
