Jaipur: A man was detained in Rajasthan’s Kota after a video allegedly showing him threatening to shoot Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, circulated widely on social media.
According to police, the video went viral soon after it surfaced, prompting authorities to initiate immediate action. The individual identified in connection with the clip was taken into custody for questioning.
Kota police detained Raja Amera, who is accused of issuing threats against Congress Members of Parliament, including Rahul Gandhi, in the purported video. Officers acted swiftly once the footage came to their attention and brought him in for interrogation.
Police officials stated that they received the video in which the youth claimed association with the Karni Sena. In the recording, he referred to an alleged incident in Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s chamber and expressed anger over what he described as misconduct by opposition MPs.
Based on the contents of the video, authorities proceeded to detain the accused. Investigations are currently underway, and interrogation is ongoing.
In the viral clip, the man reportedly alleged that the behaviour of 25 opposition MPs toward Om Birla would not be tolerated and held Rahul Gandhi responsible for the incident. He warned that if a similar situation were to arise again, the residences of the MPs involved would be vandalised and that Rahul Gandhi would be shot at his home. He also stated in the video that he was prepared to face imprisonment for carrying out such actions.
Following his detention, Raja Amera denied knowledge of the video. He claimed that a fake social media account had been created in his name and alleged that opposition parties had conspired against him. Identifying himself as a “Sanatani Hindu,” he further stated that he supports the idea of India becoming a Hindu nation.
Police have not issued further details regarding the authenticity of the claims made by the accused and are continuing their inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the video and its origin.
The incident has triggered political reactions in the state. Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasara addressed the matter on social media, stating that Rahul Gandhi had been openly threatened with murder.
In his remarks, Dotasara alleged that such threats reflected what he described as a toxic mindset. He compared the situation to the ideology that led to the actions of Nathuram Godse and accused the BJP and RSS of encouraging radical extremism by labelling dissenting voices as “anti-national,” thereby creating an atmosphere conducive to violence.
Authorities have not commented on the political statements made in response to the incident. Meanwhile, security agencies continue to investigate the matter and verify the claims related to the video.
Officials have indicated that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. Further details are expected after the interrogation process is completed.
