It has been more than three years since Stranger Things last transported viewers to Hawkins, Indiana — the eerie small town at the heart of one of Netflix’s biggest global successes. The hugely anticipated fifth and final season is now almost here, marking the conclusion of a pop-culture phenomenon.
As the wait ends, many fans may understandably feel their memory of Eleven’s world has drifted a little… well, Upside Down. Here’s a refresher on what’s ahead and what happened last time we visited the gang.
When will Season 5 release?
The first four episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 will arrive on Netflix in the UK on Thursday, 27 November at 01:00 GMT — a simultaneous worldwide release. Viewers in Los Angeles can tune in earlier at 17:00 on Wednesday, while New York audiences will get access at 20:00 the same day.
The release comes in three stages:
- Episodes 1–4: 27 November 2025
- Episodes 5–7: Christmas Day 2025
- Episode 8 (Finale: The Rightside Up): New Year’s Eve 2025
By the start of 2026, the story of Hawkins will officially be complete — though some favourite characters may not make it to the finish line.
Where did Season 4 leave us?
The previous season ended with the group splitting up in a desperate attempt to defeat Vecna. Viewers learned that Eleven played a pivotal role in his creation after sending Henry Creel into another dimension during her time in the Hawkins lab.
As Henry travelled through the void, he burned and evolved into the terrifying Vecna. His attempt to return to the real world led him to target Eleven’s friend Max — whom he killed briefly before Eleven brought her back to life, giving Vecna another chance.
Although the team believed they had beaten him, the barrier between Hawkins and the Upside Down tore open. Flowers withered, the skies darkened, and blood-red lightning cracked overhead — signaling a looming showdown for the fate of the town.
Who is Henry Creel/One/Vecna?
The antagonist has gone by multiple identities:
- Henry Creel: A boy who slipped into a dark dimension for 12 hours and returned with powers
- “One”: The first test subject of Dr Brenner at Hawkins National Lab
- Vecna: His final and most monstrous form
After murdering his family and being captured by Brenner, Henry’s powers were restricted using a device in his neck. He later manipulated Eleven into helping him regain strength, leading to the battle that sent him into the Upside Down — where he evolved into Vecna.
Why does Stranger Things remain a major TV event?
Stranger Things became one of Netflix’s early breakthrough originals, growing into a cultural juggernaut. Season 4 alone tallied more than 1.8 billion viewing hours on the platform, according to Netflix.
The series propelled its young stars into global fame:
- Millie Bobby Brown went from breakout talent to headlining major Hollywood projects
- Gaten Matarazzo, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp became household names
- Winona Ryder’s role as Joyce Byers sparked a major career resurgence
- David Harbour used his portrayal of Jim Hopper as a springboard into major franchises like Marvel
The show also expanded into theatre with The First Shadow on London’s West End, further cementing its influence.
As the end approaches, anticipation is sky-high to see how Hawkins — and the beloved characters who made it iconic — will face their final battle.
