Srinagar: Three alleged militants affiliated with the banned outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, officials said.
Security agencies stated that the operation was carried out in the district’s challenging terrain, resulting in the deaths of three suspected Pakistani militants. According to preliminary information, the bodies of the deceased were found charred beyond recognition, complicating immediate identification.
Officials indicated that early assessments suggest one of the militants may have been Saifullah, described as a JeM commander who had allegedly infiltrated into Jammu and Kashmir nearly five years ago. He is believed to have been involved in multiple attacks in the region.
Among the incidents linked to the suspected commander was a July 2024 attack in which four soldiers, including a captain, were killed. Authorities are conducting further verification to confirm the identities of the deceased militants.
The encounter took place amid ongoing counter-terror operations in the region. Security forces have intensified operations in several districts to prevent infiltration and dismantle militant networks.
Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma praised the troops involved in the operation. He commended the personnel of the White Knight Corps for what he described as “swift and precise” action under difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions.
The Army reiterated its commitment to maintaining security and working toward a terror-free Jammu and Kashmir. Officials emphasised that operations against militant groups would continue in accordance with established security protocols.
Authorities have not released additional details about the specific location of the encounter or the sequence of events leading to the exchange of fire. Further investigation is underway to confirm the identities and affiliations of the militants.
Security forces remain deployed in the area as part of follow-up measures. Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, and any additional findings will be shared following verification procedures.
The incident marks another development in the region’s ongoing counter-insurgency efforts. The Army and other security agencies continue to conduct coordinated operations aimed at curbing militant activity and preventing future attacks.
