New Delhi: Lockheed Martin has received the 250th empennage for its C-130J Super Hercules aircraft from Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL), further strengthening the long-standing partnership between India and the United States in the aerospace sector.

The empennage — the full tail structure of the aircraft — includes the vertical and horizontal stabilisers essential for aerodynamic balance, control and safety. These assemblies are manufactured at TLMAL’s advanced aerospace production facility located in Hyderabad.

Following completion of manufacturing, the unit was shipped to Lockheed Martin’s facility in Marietta, Georgia, where it will be integrated into the final C-130J production line.

Lockheed Martin said that the quality and technical precision delivered by the Indian joint venture has contributed significantly to the global C-130J fleet’s performance across diverse missions. The aircraft currently serves the defence and humanitarian needs of 23 countries worldwide, supporting over 20 mission profiles including tactical transport, special operations, disaster relief, medical evacuation and aerial refuelling.

A Decade of Partnership and Growth

TLMAL was established in 2010 as a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems Limited and the US aerospace major. The facility has become a key supplier in Lockheed Martin’s global supply chain, producing major aerostructures that feed directly into the C-130J production ecosystem.

Along with component manufacturing, the partnership extends to quality assurance, workforce skill development and technology absorption, supporting India’s ambition to expand local defence industrial capabilities under the “Make in India” initiative.

Rod McLean, Vice President for Air Mobility & Maritime Missions at Lockheed Martin, said the milestone demonstrates the deepening collaboration with India and reflects the growing role of Indian suppliers in advanced aerospace manufacturing.

India’s Defence Manufacturing Outlook

The Indian Air Force also operates the C-130J for a wide range of strategic airlift missions across challenging terrains. The aircraft has been deployed during disaster relief operations, humanitarian missions, and critical national logistics requirements.

India’s defence manufacturing sector is expected to expand rapidly in the coming years. Industry projections estimate that the defence technology market — valued at $7.6 billion in 2025 — could nearly triple to $19 billion by 2030, driven by a strong focus on digital systems, AI-enabled platforms and high-precision industrial capability.

Analysts note that technology-driven solutions are expected to constitute nearly half of India’s defence expenditure by the end of the decade, signalling a transition from primarily platform acquisition to advanced engineering and innovation.

As India seeks to increase self-reliance in defence production, collaborations such as TLMAL are seen as key enablers in advancing expertise, strengthening supply chains and opening greater export opportunities.

The delivery of the 250th tail assembly marks a symbolic moment in the partnership — demonstrating that jointly developed products from India are supporting global defence operations every day.
