Jaipur: The New Year in Rajasthan is likely to begin with a spell of cold weather accompanied by light rainfall, as a strong Western Disturbance is expected to influence the region on December 31 and January 1, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Weather officials said the system may bring cold winds and scattered precipitation to several parts of the state.

As per the IMD forecast, light rain or drizzle is likely in parts of northern and western Rajasthan during this period. Areas that are expected to be affected include the Bikaner division and the Shekhawati region. Districts such as Bikaner, Churu, Sikar, Jhunjhunu and surrounding areas may experience intermittent light rainfall as the Western Disturbance becomes active.

Meteorological officials said the incoming weather system could also lead to a further drop in temperatures across the state. Cold winds are expected to intensify during the transition into the New Year, adding to the prevailing winter chill. The IMD has cautioned that these conditions could make mornings and nights particularly cold in many areas.

In addition to rainfall and falling temperatures, the weather department has warned of the possibility of dense fog in some parts of Rajasthan during the first week of January. Fog conditions, combined with cold winds, may reduce visibility in certain regions, especially during early morning and late night hours.

Several cities and towns across Rajasthan have already recorded a sharp decline in night temperatures over the past few days. According to IMD data, minimum temperatures in many locations have dropped into single digits, reflecting the strengthening winter conditions. The expected Western Disturbance is likely to maintain or further intensify this cold spell.

Weather officials explained that Western Disturbances are a common winter phenomenon that affect northern India, often bringing cloud cover, rainfall, and colder conditions. In this case, the system developing at the end of December is expected to influence Rajasthan at the very start of the New Year.

The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious, particularly during early morning hours when cold winds and fog may be more pronounced. Although the forecast indicates only light rainfall or drizzle, even small amounts of precipitation combined with low temperatures can enhance the feeling of cold.

The anticipated weather conditions could also impact daily routines, including travel and outdoor activities, especially in areas prone to fog. Officials have urged people to take necessary precautions during periods of reduced visibility and colder-than-usual conditions.

While the rainfall is not expected to be heavy, its occurrence at the start of the year marks a shift in weather patterns for the region. The IMD continues to monitor the Western Disturbance and has said updates will be issued if there are any significant changes in the forecast.

The cold spell currently affecting Rajasthan has already made its presence felt, with chilly nights becoming more frequent. The forecast for the New Year suggests that winter conditions are likely to persist, at least through the early days of January.

As the state prepares to usher in the New Year, the IMD’s forecast points to a combination of cold winds, light rain, and fog in several regions. Residents in northern and western Rajasthan, particularly in the Bikaner division and Shekhawati region, are likely to experience these winter conditions as 2025 begins.
