New Delhi: Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran on Friday described the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ as an “outstanding” event that highlighted India’s broader artificial intelligence strategy and its ambition to emerge as a global AI leader.

Speaking to IANS on the sidelines of the summit in New Delhi, Chandrasekaran said the gathering provided a comprehensive platform to present India’s AI initiatives, long-term plans and strategic vision to a global audience.

“I think it’s an outstanding summit where we are able to show all of our initiatives, the plans, vision coming together of all the important leaders globally and all the political leaders, and most importantly, the energy, the AI vision and what India can do,” he said.

The summit brought together international leaders, industry stakeholders and policymakers to discuss AI’s transformative potential. It also marked a key collaboration between OpenAI and Tata Group aimed at strengthening India’s AI infrastructure.

As part of the partnership, OpenAI will work with Tata Group to develop local, AI-ready data centre capacity designed to meet requirements related to data residency, security and long-term domestic capability. The initiative is intended to support advanced AI operations within India.

Under the agreement, OpenAI will become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data centre business. The collaboration will begin with 100 megawatts of capacity and has the potential to scale up to 1 gigawatt over time.

The planned infrastructure will enable OpenAI’s most advanced AI models to operate securely within India. According to the announcement, the setup is expected to deliver lower latency while complying with data residency, security and regulatory requirements, particularly for mission-critical and government-related workloads.

Chandrasekaran described the collaboration as a significant step in India’s AI journey. “This strategic collaboration between OpenAI and Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI. We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India,” he said.

He added that the partnership represents an opportunity for OpenAI and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to jointly drive transformation across industries. He also emphasised the importance of equipping young people with relevant skills to thrive in the AI era.

“This is a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries and together, we will skill India’s youth and empower them to succeed in the AI era,” Chandrasekaran noted.

In addition to infrastructure development, Tata Group plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across its workforce over the coming years. The rollout will begin with hundreds of thousands of employees at Tata Consultancy Services, positioning it among the largest enterprise AI deployments globally.

The summit served as a platform to present India’s approach to AI development, bringing together public and private sector efforts under a shared vision. Chandrasekaran said the convergence of global leaders and policymakers at the event reflected both the scale of India’s ambitions and the energy driving the country’s AI ecosystem.

With major investments in infrastructure, enterprise adoption and workforce skilling, the announcements made at the summit underscore India’s focus on building long-term AI capabilities and positioning itself as a significant player in the global AI landscape.
